Catholic Mass Readings
Readings of the Day
First Reading: Titus 3:1-7
Beloved: Remind everyone to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarrelling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy towards all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Psalm 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6 (R. 1)
R/. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want
Gospel Acclamation
V/. Alleluia
R/. Alleluia
V/. Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
R/. Alleluia
Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: Ten men are healed on the road. Nine keep walking. One stops, turns around, and comes back shouting praise. Jesus notices the turning.
1. Ten lepers stand at a distance and call out, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. He tells them to go and show themselves to the priests. On the way, their skin becomes clean. Ten bodies healed at once.
2. Picture the road at that moment. Nine men hurrying ahead, laughing, already imagining home, family, the first meal at a table with others again. And one man who stops in the middle of the road and turns around.
3. He comes back praising God with a loud voice and falls at Jesus’ feet to thank Him. Luke adds one detail: he was a Samaritan, a foreigner. The outsider is the one who remembers to come back.
4. Were not ten cleansed? Jesus asks. Where are the nine? It is not anger in His voice so much as longing. He healed them all. He hoped to see them all again.
5. The nine are not wicked. They are simply busy with their new life. That is our usual way. We pray hard when we are sick or afraid, and when the answer comes, we hurry on. Gratitude is the turning back that most of us forget.
6. To the one who returned, Jesus says, rise and go, your faith has made you well. All ten were cleansed. Only one heard those words. Thanksgiving brought him closer than healing alone could.
7. Martin of Tours knew this turning. As a young soldier, he cut his military cloak in half to cover a freezing beggar. That night, the story goes, he dreamed of Christ wearing the half cloak. He spent the rest of his life turning back toward the Lord who had met him on the road.
My Practice: Before you sleep tonight, turn back to God with three specific thanks for answers you received and never thanked Him for. Say them aloud if you can.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You healed ten, and only one came back to thank You. Forgive us for the times we have hurried on with Your gifts and forgotten the Giver. Teach us to stop on the road, to turn around, and to fall at Your feet in gratitude. Make us generous like Saint Martin, quick to share what we have with those who are cold and in need. Let our thanksgiving bring us closer to You, so that we hear You say, rise and go, your faith has made you well. Amen.
Question to Reflect Today
- What answered prayer have you hurried past without turning back to thank God?
Thank You
