Gospel: Luke 18: 1-8

And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Saturday – 32nd Week in Ordinary Time

1. Luke tells us the purpose before the story even begins. Jesus told them a parable to show that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He knew His disciples would grow tired of praying. He knows we do.

2. A widow keeps coming to a judge who neither fears God nor respects anyone. Give me justice against my adversary, she says. He refuses. She comes again. And again. Finally he gives in, not out of kindness, but because she is wearing him out.

3. Jesus is not saying God is like that judge. He is saying the opposite. If even an unjust judge gives in to persistence, how much more will God give justice to His chosen ones who cry to Him day and night?

4. But many of us have cried day and night. For a child to come back to faith. For healing that has not come. For a job, a peace, a marriage, a release from grief. And the answer still seems slow. Jesus does not deny that. He only asks us not to stop.

5. Then He ends with a sentence that is not a promise or a command. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth? He does not answer it. He leaves it in the air for every person who has ever been tempted to stop praying.

Prayer

Lord, You told us to pray always and not lose heart, and You know how often we grow tired. Some of our prayers have been prayed for years, and still we wait. Do not let us stop. Give us the stubborn faith of the widow, who kept coming back. When we feel nothing, let our faithfulness speak for us. And when You come, Lord, let You find faith in us. Amen.

Question to Reflect Today

  • What prayer have you been tempted to stop praying, and what keeps you from bringing it to God again?

Amen 🙏🙏🙏
