Brethren: This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

Gospel: Luke 5:33-39
At that time: The Pharisees and the Scribes said to Jesus, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: New wine bursts old skins. Christ did not come to improve the life we already have. He comes to make us new creations, and that new life is the work of His grace, not our willpower.
1. Why don’t your disciples fast like everyone else? It is a fair question, and Jesus answers with wine and cloth. You cannot mend an old coat with new cloth, or pour new wine into a stiff old skin. The new will tear the old apart.
2. He is describing what His grace does inside a person. It is not a little religion added to a life that stays the same. It is like new wine, still working, still expanding, alive in a way the old shape cannot hold. To follow Christ is to be made new, and new life stretches everything.
3. We would often prefer a small repair. We want Christ to bless the marriage without touching our pride. We want Him to calm our worry without changing our need to control. We want Him to forgive the sin without asking us to leave it. We want the new wine and the old skin together, and He tells us gently that it cannot hold.
4. But do not hear this as a demand you must somehow meet. Hear Who is speaking. The One who pours the new wine also gives the new skin. Paul calls this becoming a new creation in Christ. The Holy Spirit remakes from within what we could never repair ourselves. The stretching is His work, and He does not tear us to harm us.
5. Still, there is a real cost, and Jesus is honest about it. His last line is quiet. No one who has drunk old wine wants the new, because he says the old is good. We grow attached to the familiar, even to our familiar faults. Conversion asks us to let a comfortable self die, so a truer self can live.
6. This is why the Christian life is a daily choice, not a single one. Each morning grace offers new wine. Each day we choose whether to stay a stiff old skin, or to let Him make us soft. Holiness is simply saying yes to that remaking again and again, and letting Him do what we cannot.
7. Paul shows the freedom that makes this possible. It is a small thing, he says, to be judged by others, or even by himself. It is the Lord who judges. When we stop defending our image before other people, and give ourselves fully to Christ, we become soft enough for the new wine to fill.
My Practice: Name the one part of your life where you want God’s blessing but not His change, your temper, a grudge, a habit you defend. Give Him that exact place today, and ask the Holy Spirit to remake it, since you already know willpower alone has not.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You pour new wine, and we keep offering You the stiff old skin of a life we do not want disturbed. We want Your blessing without Your change, a small repair instead of a new creation. Forgive us. By Your Holy Spirit, make us soft enough to be remade, even where the old feels safe. We cannot renew ourselves. Only Your grace can. Where we cling to a familiar fault, give us courage to let it die, trusting that what You are making in us is fuller life. Free us from living for the judgment of others, so we can be wholly Yours. Amen.

- Where do you want Christ’s blessing without His change, and can you ask the Holy Spirit to remake that part of you, knowing your own effort has not been enough?
