First Reading:1 Corinthians 2:10b-16
Brethren: The Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Gospel: Luke 4:31-37
At that time: Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: A demon names Jesus perfectly, the Holy One of God, and stays in darkness. It is possible to be correct about Christ and still be far from Him. What saves us is not knowing about Him, but being close to Him.
1. A man in the synagogue shouts the truth. I know who you are, the Holy One of God. The unclean spirit inside him has better theology than the people in the pews. It names Christ exactly, and it is still lost.
2. Stay with how serious this is. Correct belief did not save the demon. Belief was never meant to stay in the head. Scripture says even the demons believe, and tremble. Knowing about God, without loving God, is the faith of demons.
3. This should humble a certain kind of confidence. We can know the Catechism, win the debate, and say the Creed without a mistake, and still keep Christ at a distance. Facts about God are not the same as friendship with God. Only the second one saves us.
4. Yet this same story is gentle toward the person who fears they know too little. If information were the key, the demon would enter heaven first. It is not the key. The worried mother who can barely form a prayer, but leans on Jesus, is closer to Him than any expert who does not love Him.
5. So where does real faith come from? Not from being clever enough to reach God. Paul gives the answer. No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God, and we have received that Spirit. Closeness to Christ is not something we climb toward. It is a gift poured into us.
6. That gift has a home. It is given in Baptism. It is renewed in the Eucharist. It is restored in Confession. It grows every time we pray as though Someone truly listens. Faith deepens not by gathering more facts, but by staying near to Christ.
7. Notice that Jesus does not argue with the demon. He commands it to leave, and He frees the man. That is the point. Christ did not come to be described correctly. He came to set captives free, and He still does, in us.
My Practice: Stop trying to earn closeness to God by learning more, and go to where He gives Himself. Go to Confession this week, receive the Eucharist, and pray honestly. Ask the Holy Spirit to turn what you know about Christ into love for Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, even the demons named You correctly and stayed in darkness, and that makes us honest. We do not want a faith that lives only in our minds. We want to know You, not only know about You. Send Your Holy Spirit, whom You have poured into us, to turn our knowledge into love. Draw us to the sacraments, where You give Yourself, and set us free as You freed the man in the synagogue. We do not come to pass a test. We come to belong to You. Make Yourself real to us, Lord. Amen.
