Psalter: Week 2
Here are the Catholic Mass readings and a daily Gospel reflection for Thursday, October 29, 2026. Paul tells us to put on the armor of God, and Jesus weeps over a city that would not let Him gather it.
Catholic Mass Readings
Readings of the Day
First Reading: Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Gospel: Luke 13:31-35
At that time: Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
Thursday – 30th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: Jesus is warned that Herod wants to kill Him. He does not answer with fear. He answers with grief, over a city He loves that keeps refusing to come under His wings.
1. Some Pharisees come with a warning. Get away from here, Herod wants to kill you. Jesus is not shaken. Go and tell that fox, He says, that I cast out demons and heal today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my course. He will not be hurried away by a frightened king.
2. Then His voice changes. Jerusalem, Jerusalem. He says the name twice, the way we say the name of someone we love who is breaking our heart. The city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to it.
3. How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. Of all the images He could choose for Himself, He chooses a mother hen. Not a lion, not a king. A bird spreading her wings over small, frightened chicks, putting her own body between them and danger.
4. And you were not willing.
5. That is the sentence that hurts. God does not force the gathering. The wings are open, and the chicks can still run. Any parent who has stood at a window late at night, waiting for a son or daughter who will not come home, knows a little of what is in Christ’s voice here.
6. He says their house will be left to them, and they will not see Him until they say, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. It is a lament, not a curse. He is grieving what they are choosing, and leaving a door open for the day they might choose differently.
7. It is uncomfortable to ask, but the question is ours as much as Jerusalem’s. Where have the wings been open over us, again and again, and we were not willing? He is still saying our name twice. He has not closed His wings.
My Practice: Name one place where Christ has been trying to gather you and you keep running from Him. Today, stop running and let yourself come under His wings, even for a few minutes of honest prayer.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You wept over Jerusalem and longed to gather its children as a hen gathers her brood, and they were not willing. We hear our own names in that cry. So many times You have opened Your wings over us, and we have run toward our own ways. Forgive our stubbornness. Do not stop calling us. Gather us now, with everyone we love who has wandered far from You. Shelter us under Your wings, where we are safe from what would destroy us. We are willing, Lord, or we want to be. Help us. Amen.
Question to Reflect Today
- Where have you felt Christ trying to gather you, and what keeps you from letting yourself be gathered?
Thank You
