Catholic Mass Readings and Reflection August 25, 2026

1. Jesus is direct with the Pharisees today, and it stings because it is fair. You tithe down to your garden herbs, mint and dill and cumin, and you have neglected the weightier things, justice and mercy and faith. You are precise about the tiny and careless about the huge.

2. He gives them a sharp picture. You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Imagine a cup polished to a shine on the outside, still grimy where the drink actually touches. Nobody wants to drink from that.

3. Then the command that reorders everything. First clean the inside of the cup, and the outside will be clean as well. Notice the order. Not outside first for show, but inside first for truth. Get the heart right, and the visible life follows honestly.

4. We are tempted to work the other way. We manage how we look, the reputation, the image, the version of ourselves we post and present, while the inside goes untended. It is easier to polish the rim than to scrub the bottom. Appearances are cheaper than conversion.

5. But a clean outside over a dirty inside is not holiness. It is decoration. We can fool other people for a while, and we can even fool ourselves. We cannot fool God, who sees straight past the shine to the residue underneath.

6. This is not despair, though. Jesus is not condemning the cup. He is telling us where to start. Bring Him the inside, the resentment, the greed, the private appetites, and let Him wash there first. When the heart is cleaned, the life outside slowly becomes real instead of staged.

7. Paul, in the first reading, steadies a church shaken by rumours and false alarms about the end. Stand firm, he says, and hold to what you were taught. A settled inner life is not rattled by every gust. The heart anchored in Christ is the clean cup that does not need to fake its shine.
