“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

At that time: Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘l saw you under the fig tree’, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: We live as though the world is only what we can see. Today the Church throws open the curtain. Daniel sees thousands upon thousands serving God, and Jesus promises angels ascending and descending. Reality is far larger, and far more on our side, than it looks.
1. Most days we assume the visible world is all there is. What we can touch, measure, and check on a screen. Today’s feast quietly insists that this is not the whole picture, that around us, unseen, is a vast reality we mostly forget.
2. Daniel is given a glimpse. He sees the Ancient of Days on a throne of fire, and around Him a thousand thousands serving Him, ten thousand times ten thousand standing before Him. Heaven is not empty or quiet. It is crowded with worship, alive with beings who serve God without ceasing.
3. Among them are the three the Church names today. Michael, whose name means “who is like God,” the defender against evil. Gabriel, “the strength of God,” who carried the message to Mary. Raphael, “God heals,” who walked beside Tobias on his journey. Their very names are small sermons about what God does for His people.
4. We can find angels quaint, the stuff of children’s pictures. But Scripture treats them as real servants of God, powerful and active. To believe in them is simply to take seriously that God’s reality is bigger than our senses, and that He surrounds us with help we cannot see.
5. This is not meant to make us afraid of the unseen, but to reassure us. If you feel alone in a struggle, outnumbered by what is against you, the Archangels’ feast says look again. There are more with you than against you. God does not leave His people unattended in a merely material world.
6. In the Gospel, Jesus opens this curtain for Nathanael. You will see heaven opened, He says, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. He is telling him that the traffic between heaven and earth is real, and that it now runs through Jesus Himself. Christ is the ladder joining the two worlds.
7. That is the heart of the feast. The angels ascend and descend on the Son of Man. Heaven is not only crowded and real; it is opened to us in Christ. Through Him the unseen world is not distant but near, and all its help is turned, in the end, toward drawing us home to God.
My Practice: When you next feel alone or outnumbered by what you are facing, pause and remember the unseen reality this feast reveals, and ask your guardian angel and the Archangels for help by name. You have more on your side than you can see.
Prayer
Lord God, today You throw open the curtain and show us a reality far larger than our senses. Daniel saw thousands upon thousands serving You, and Your Son promised the angels ascending and descending upon Him. Forgive us for living as though only the visible world is real. Send Your holy Archangels, Michael to defend us, Gabriel to bring us Your word, Raphael to heal and guide us. When we feel alone and outnumbered, remind us that more stand with us than against us, and that in Christ heaven itself is opened to us. Draw us, with all Your angels, home to You. Amen.
