Psalter: Week 4

Catholic Mass Readings
Readings of the Day
First Reading: Ephesians 1:11-14
Brethren: In Christ we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13 R. (12)
R/. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage
Gospel Acclamation
V/. Alleluia
R/. Alleluia
V/. May your merciful love be upon us as we hope in you, O Lord
R/. Alleluia
Gospel: Luke 12:1-7
At that time: When so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Friday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: There is a fear that sits in the chest at three in the morning, the bill, the diagnosis, the child who will not call back. Into exactly that fear Jesus says something almost too small to believe: the hairs of your head are all numbered.
1. There is a particular fear that comes in the small hours, when the house is quiet and the mind will not stop. The unpaid bill. The test result you are waiting on. The job that may not last. The grown child who has stopped answering. You lie there and the worry grows teeth. Most of us know that fear by name.
2. Jesus speaks right into it. Do not fear, He says, those who kill the body and after that have nothing more they can do. He does not pretend the fears are not real. He has just named death itself. He is not telling us there is nothing frightening. He is telling us there is something steadier underneath the fright.
3. Then He reaches for the smallest things He can find. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten by God. Two pennies. The cheapest thing in the market, the bird nobody counts. And God has not forgotten a single one of them.
4. And then the line that undoes the three-in-the-morning fear. Even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Not weighed in general. Numbered. Counted one by one, by a Father who misses nothing. The God who holds the galaxies knows the exact, falling, unimportant details of you.
5. Sit in that for a moment, because it is almost too small to believe. We can accept that God runs the universe. It is harder to believe He knows the particular thing keeping us awake tonight, and cares. Jesus insists He does. You are worth more than many sparrows, and not one sparrow is forgotten.
6. This does not magically remove the bill or the diagnosis. Jesus does not promise the frightening thing will vanish. He promises something harder and better: that in the middle of it, we are not forgotten, not overlooked, not alone with the worry. The Father who counts the hairs is awake at three in the morning with us.
7. Paul says we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, marked as God’s own, a guarantee of what is to come. That is the deeper reason the fear does not get the last word. We belong to Him, sealed, counted, held. The worst the world can do cannot unmark what God has claimed as His own.
My Practice: Tonight, when the familiar fear returns, say back to it the one thing Jesus said: even the hairs of my head are counted. Name your worry to the Father who has not forgotten a single sparrow, and leave it in His hands before you sleep.
Prayer
Father, You know the fear that finds us in the small hours, the worries that grow teeth when the house is quiet. You do not pretend they are nothing; Your Son named even death. And still You tell us not to be afraid, because not one sparrow is forgotten by You, and the very hairs of our head are counted. We are amazed that the God of the galaxies knows the small, falling details of our lives. You have sealed us with Your Spirit and marked us as Your own. Be with us in the sleepless hours, and let us rest in the truth that we are not forgotten. Amen.
Question to Reflect Today
- What is the fear that visits you in the quiet hours, and how might it change to know the Father who counts the sparrows has not forgotten you in it?
Thank You
