Catholic Mass Readings and Reflection October 12, 2026

Here are the Catholic Mass readings and a daily Gospel reflection for Monday, October 12, 2026. Paul calls us children of the free woman, not the slave, and Jesus tells a sign-hungry crowd that something greater than Jonah is already here.

Psalm 113:1b-2, 3-4, 5a and 6-7 (R. see 2)

Gospel: Luke 11:29-32

At that time: When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

Monday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time

1. The crowds press in, and what they want is a sign. Show us something. Prove it. Give us a miracle big enough to settle the matter once and for all. It sounds reasonable. It is the request of people who want certainty before they will commit.

2. Jesus calls it an evil generation that seeks a sign. That seems harsh, until you see what He means. They have already seen Him heal and teach and cast out demons. More proof is not what they lack. What they lack is the willingness to believe what is already in front of them.

3. The only sign He gives is Jonah. As Jonah was three days in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days in the heart of the earth. The sign is a death and a rising. The sign is the cross and the empty tomb. It is not a spectacle; it is a grave that could not hold Him.

4. Then He says the line that should stop us cold. The men of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah, and look, something greater than Jonah is here. The pagan city turned back at a reluctant prophet’s warning. And a greater voice than Jonah was speaking to people who would not turn at all.

5. Something greater than Jonah is here. He does not spell out what we are to do with that sentence. He lets it hang. The pagans had less and repented. We have Christ Himself, and often we do nothing. He leaves the comparison sitting there, and He lets it look at us.

6. We know this hunger for a sign in our own prayer. If God would just show me clearly, we think, then I would change, then I would trust, then I would obey. But Nineveh had a far smaller sign and repented in a day. The problem was never the size of the sign. It was the hardness that no sign can soften from outside.

7. So Jesus asks nothing more here, and neither will this reflection. He simply names that the greatest sign is already given, already risen, already here. What we do with a greater-than-Jonah standing in front of us, He leaves to us. The question is left open on purpose, and only your life can answer it.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we keep asking for a sign, for proof large enough to make faith easy, while You stand before us already risen from the dead. Forgive the hardness that no miracle can soften from the outside. The people of Nineveh turned back at far less than we have been given. You are greater than Jonah, greater than anything we are waiting for. Soften what has gone hard in us, and give us the humility to repent now, today, at the word we have already heard. We ask not for more proof, but for the grace to answer the sign You have already given. Amen.

Question to Reflect Today

  • What sign do you keep waiting for before you will trust or obey God, and what has already been given to you that you have not yet answered?

Thank You 🙏🙏🙏
