Gospel: Luke 11:1-4

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. And he said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’”

Wednesday – 27th Week in Ordinary Time

1. The disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick, calm storms, feed thousands. Of all the things they might have asked Him to teach, they ask for one. Lord, teach us to pray. They had watched Him go off alone to pray and come back carrying something, and they wanted it. They sensed that prayer was underneath everything else He did.

2. He answers with words so familiar we can forget how daring they are. Father. He tells us to call God Father. Not distant ruler, not far-off power, but Father. The whole of prayer begins with being allowed to come that close.

3. Then, before any request: hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. We turn first toward God Himself, His name, His reign, not our list of needs. Prayer starts by lifting our eyes to the One we are speaking to, not by handing Him our wishes.

4. Only then the asking, and how simple it is. Give us each day our daily bread. Not a full storehouse, just today’s bread, for today. He teaches us to lean on God one day at a time, which is the only way trust ever grows. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive. Do not lead us into temptation. Short, honest, human words.

5. Today the Church keeps the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Rosary is simply this prayer and Mary’s own prayer woven together, while we walk slowly through the life of her Son. Bead by bead, we stand where Mary stood and look at Christ through her eyes, from the stable to the cross to the empty tomb.

6. This is why the Rosary is not, as some fear, a heap of empty words. The words become quiet and steady, like a familiar road under the feet, while the heart gazes on Jesus. Mary never holds our eyes on herself. She turns them, always, toward her Son.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Your disciples asked You for one thing, to teach them to pray, and You gave them the words that begin with Father. Teach us to pray them not out of habit but from the heart. When we rush to hand You our needs, slow us down, so we lift our eyes to You first. Give us this day only the bread of this day, and the trust to leave tomorrow in Your hands. And through the Rosary, let Your mother take us by the hand and lead us, quietly, into the mysteries of Your life. Teach us, Lord, to pray. Amen.

Question to Reflect Today

  • When you pray, do you begin with God Himself or with your list of needs? What would change if, like the disciples, you asked Him simply to teach you to pray?

Thank You 🙏🙏🙏
