First Reading: Micah 6: 1-4, 6-8
Hear what the Lord says: Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth, for the Lord has an indictment against his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with[a] thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Gospel: Matthew 12:38-42
At that time: Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great sea creature, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, some thing greater than Solomon is here.

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: They ask Jesus for a sign, while standing in front of the greatest sign ever given. The problem was never a lack of proof. It was a heart that had already decided not to believe.
1. The scribes and Pharisees come to Jesus with a request that sounds reasonable. “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” Show us something. Prove yourself. But there is a trap hidden in it. They have already watched Him heal the sick and cast out demons. They have seen signs for months.
2. So Jesus refuses. “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign.” That sounds harsh, until you see what He means. They do not want evidence. They want an excuse to delay. Another miracle would change nothing, because the problem is not their eyes. It is their will.
3. This is the detail we walk past. We tell ourselves that if God gave us clearer proof, we would believe and obey. Jesus quietly exposes that lie. These men had proof standing in front of them and still would not bend. More signs do not soften a hard heart. They only harden it further.
4. Then Jesus points ahead to the one sign He will give. “As Jonah was three days in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days in the heart of the earth.” He is speaking of His death and resurrection. The ultimate sign will be Easter. And many who saw even that still would not believe.
5. He drives it home with two examples that must have stung. The people of Nineveh, pagans, repented at the preaching of Jonah. The Queen of the South traveled far to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Outsiders responded to less. These insiders, with far more in front of them, will not.
6. “Something greater than Jonah is here. Something greater than Solomon is here.” The pagans came running to a prophet and a king. And here is God Himself, in the flesh, and the religious experts ask for a magic trick. The greater the gift before them, the greater their refusal.
7. This searches us. We are surrounded by signs. Answered prayers we explain away. Grace we credit to luck. We keep asking God to prove Himself while ignoring the proof already given. The issue is rarely evidence. It is whether we are willing to act on what we already know.
8. This is the thread to Micah. A people wonder what will satisfy God, offering more and bigger sacrifices. Micah cuts through it. “He has told you, O man, what is good. To do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” God never wanted a spectacle. He wanted a changed life. That is the only sign that matters.
My Practice: Stop waiting for a sign before you obey. You already have more than Nineveh, more than the Queen of the South, more than the men who demanded proof from Jesus. The thing blocking you was never a lack of evidence. It is the unwillingness to move on what you know. So take the one thing God has already made clear to you, and do it today. Do justice. Show kindness. Walk humbly. That obedience is worth more than any sign you are still waiting for.
