Here are the Catholic Mass readings and a daily reflection for Thursday, August 06, 2026, the Feast of the Transfiguration. Daniel sees the Son of Man in glory, and on the mountain three disciples glimpse it just before the road to the cross.

First Reading: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

Second Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-19

Gospel: Matthew 17: 1-9
At that time: Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
Thursday – 18th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: The glory on the mountain came just before the road to the cross. God gave the light first, on purpose, to be held in the coming dark.
1. Daniel sees him centuries early: one like a Son of Man, coming on the clouds, given everlasting dominion. Glory belongs to this figure long before Bethlehem.
2. On the mountain, three men watch that glory break through the skin of Jesus. His face shines like the sun. Peter wants to build tents and stay in the light.
3. But the timing is the whole point. This comes right after Jesus first foretells His suffering and death. The Catechism says it plainly: the Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of his Passion, the ascent of the high mountain preparing for the ascent to Calvary (CCC 568).
4. So the light is not instead of the cross. It is provision for it. A memory of glory to carry into Good Friday, so that when the shining face hangs bloodied, they will have this day to hold.
5. We want the mountain and not the road down. But Jesus leads them back into the valley, toward Jerusalem. The vision was never the destination. It was strength for the descent.
6. Peter never forgot it. In the second reading he insists he was an eyewitness of that majesty and heard the voice on the holy mountain. Decades later the light still steadied him, all the way to his own cross.
7. The voice gives one command: listen to him. Not stay, not build. Come down, follow to Jerusalem, and trust the road even when the glory fades.
My Practice: Take the moment of light God has already given you and carry it into the valley you are walking now. He showed you the mountain so you could survive the descent.
