Gospel: Luke 11:37-41

At that time: While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

Tuesday – 28th Week in Ordinary Time

1. You have invited Jesus to dinner. Picture it. The house is clean, the table is set, every custom observed, everything done correctly. You are a Pharisee today, and that is not an insult; it means you are careful, devout, the kind who gets things right. You are quietly pleased with how it all looks.

2. Then Jesus sits down and does not wash before the meal, and you are surprised, maybe a little offended. You notice. He notices you noticing. And instead of apologizing, He says something that turns the whole evening inside out. You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

3. Feel the sting of it, because it is meant for us too. We are good at the outside. The right words at Mass, the respectable life, the clean surface everyone can see. And Jesus, like a guest who will not play along, looks straight past all of it to the inside we keep turned toward the wall.

4. He is not impressed by the spotless table. He is asking about the part of us no one is invited to see, the resentment we carry, the quiet greed, the thoughts we would never say aloud. You clean what shows, He says. God sees the cup from the inside.

5. This could crush us, but look at the strange mercy in His next words. Give as alms what is inside, He says, and everything is clean for you. He does not tell us to polish harder. He tells us to let the inside pour out, to give, to open the clenched interior life to God and to the poor, and then even the outside becomes truly clean.

6. Paul says the same thing from another angle. In Christ, neither the outward mark nor its absence counts for anything; what counts is faith working through love. Not the surface. The living interior turned toward God and neighbor. That is what Jesus is reaching for across your dinner table.

7. So the guest is still sitting there, looking not at your table but at you. He already knows the inside of the cup. He is not there to shame you for it. He is there, patient, waiting for you to stop defending the surface and simply hand Him the inside.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we are so careful about the outside, the clean surface, the right appearance, the life that looks correct to everyone watching. And You look straight past it to the inside of the cup, to the greed and resentment we keep turned away. Thank You that You do not come to shame us but to cleanse us. Give us the courage to stop defending the surface and to hand You what is really inside. Pour out through us what we have clenched tight, in generosity and honesty, so that we are clean not only where people can see, but where only You can. Amen

Question to Reflect Today

  • If Jesus looked past everything others admire about you, what is the one thing inside the cup He would be gently pointing to, and will you hand it to Him today?

Thank You 🙏🙏🙏
