Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

At that time: Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Tuesday – 27th Week in Ordinary Time

1. Martha, Martha. He says it twice. In that world, to repeat a name was tenderness, the way you reach for someone you love who is unravelling. Before any word of correction, there is affection. He is not scolding a lazy woman. He is reaching gently for an exhausted one.

2. Her complaint is fair, and we should say so plainly. She has opened her home to Jesus and a crowd, and she is doing all the serving while her sister sits. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Many of us have prayed that exact prayer, worn thin while others rest.

3. Jesus never says her serving is wrong. He says, you are anxious and worried about many things. The trouble is not the work. It is the anxiety wrapped around it, the worry that has turned welcome into burden and a sister into a rival. Good service had soured into stress.

4. One thing is necessary, He says, and Mary has chosen the better part. But notice what He does not do. He does not say what the one thing is. He leaves it hanging in the air of that noisy house, unfinished, for Martha to find. And for us.

5. So sit in the question He left open. What is the one thing necessary, for you? Not in general, but in your real life, this week, with your actual list of many things. Jesus names that there is one thing, and then He waits. He will not fill in the blank for us.

6. Perhaps it begins simply, by stopping long enough to be with Him before the serving swallows the whole day. The work will still be there afterward. But a heart that has first sat at His feet carries the same work in a completely different way.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You spoke Martha’s name twice, gently, because You saw how the worry was wearing her down. You see us the same way, busy, anxious, doing many good things and slowly losing our peace inside them. Thank You that You do not despise our work. You only long for us to stop, now and then, and sit with You. Show each of us the one thing that is necessary in our own life, and give us the courage to choose it, even when a hundred urgent things are pulling at our sleeve. Quiet our anxious hearts at Your feet. Amen.

Question to Reflect Today

  • What are the “many things” you are anxious about right now, and if you grew still enough to ask Him, what might Jesus name as the one thing necessary for you?

Thank You 🙏🙏🙏
