Gospel: John 6:52-59

At that time: The Jews disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Daily Gospel Reflection

1. Jesus goes on to say, “I am the bread of life. “They shall eat of this bread, and they shall know three things: when they abide in the Lord, living in His power, living forever. The comparison of the living bread and the manna of old is striking.

2. As such, worldly food is vastly different from heavenly food. The material food merely removes the physical hunger, provides corporeal strength, offers ephemeral satisfaction, and augments life.

3. But Jesus, the forever bread of life, satisfies this intense inner spiritual hunger and thirst; strengthens completely; fills and constantly nourishes; introduces; and causes to develop a thoroughly Spirit-filled life!

4. Paul’s conversion exemplifies this movement from the worldly to the heavenly. The conversion experience of Paul is more than just a religious shift. It is a total change of life. This transformation includes a change in mindset and a pursuit of a new way of life.

5. Saul becomes Paul; the persecutor becomes the persecuted; the law is swapped for faith; hatred for Christ turns into passion for him; violence against the believers turns into compassion for him.

6. This transformation also seems evident in Paul, where all three Eucharistic effects are at work. He is grounded in the Lord, and the Lord is in him. He lives on the power of the Lord and follows his principles. His transformed life became an invincible compass, guiding him towards eternity.
