Psalter: Week 1
Here are the Catholic Mass readings and a daily Gospel reflection for Friday, October 23, 2026. Paul pleads for unity in one body and one Spirit, and Jesus asks why we can read the weather but not the present moment with God.
Catholic Mass Readings
Readings of the Day
First Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6
Brethren: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6 (R. see 6)
R/. These are the people who seek your face, O Lord.
Gospel Acclamation
V/. Alleluia
R/. Alleluia
V/. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have revealed to little children the mysteries of the kingdom.
R/. Alleluia
Gospel: Luke 12:54-59
At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming’, and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’, and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: We check the forecast, the markets, the notifications, the mood of the room. Jesus points out that we are experts at reading everything except the one thing He is asking us to notice: what God is doing, right now, in our own life.
1. When you see a cloud rising in the west, Jesus says, you say at once, a shower is coming, and so it happens. When the wind blows from the south, you say it will be hot, and it is. You know how to read the sky. And then He asks the question that lands: so why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
2. Bring it into our own day. We read the weather app before we leave the house. We read the markets, the traffic, the news, the subtle shift in a friend’s tone, the unread messages piling up. We are constantly interpreting signals, skilled at reading what matters to us. We rarely miss a forecast.
3. And meanwhile, the one reading Jesus asks for goes undone. What is God doing in my life right now? What is this illness, this restlessness, this unexpected mercy, this quiet prompting trying to tell me? We can read the sky and miss the sign entirely. We are fluent in everything except the present moment with God.
4. It is not that God has gone silent. It is that we are not reading in His direction. We scan a hundred feeds and never ask what the Lord might be saying through the actual circumstances of today, the interruption, the conversation, the thing that went wrong, the thing that went unexpectedly right. The signs are there. We are looking at other screens.
5. Then Jesus adds something urgent. Settle with your accuser on the way to court, He says, before it is too late and the matter is out of your hands. He is talking about now, about not postponing the thing that needs to be set right while there is still time to set it. Reading the present moment is not idle reflection. It is noticing what God is asking before the hour passes.
6. So the question is not whether God is speaking. It is whether we will look up from the forecast long enough to read what He is writing into this ordinary day. The present time is not empty. It is full of Him, if we would only interpret it.
My Practice: Put down the forecasts and the feeds for a few minutes today and ask one question honestly: what is God doing in my life right now, and what is He asking of me before this moment passes? Then act on the first answer that comes.
Prayer
Lord, we are experts at reading everything that matters to us, the weather, the news, the mood of a room, the endless messages, and somehow we miss the one thing You are asking us to see: what You are doing in our lives right now. Forgive us for scanning a hundred other screens while You speak through the actual circumstances of our day. Teach us to read the present moment, to notice Your hand in the interruption and the mercy and the quiet prompting. Give us the urgency not to postpone what You are asking while there is still time. Help us to look up, and to read in Your direction. Amen.
Question to Reflect Today
- You can read the weather and the news with ease. What is God doing in your life right now that you have not stopped to read?
Thank You
