The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment. From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken. “Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this. “Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness, that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home? You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! Then Job answered the Lord and said: “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”

But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: God finally answers Job, not with explanations, but by unveiling how vast and beyond us He is. And then, in the Gospel, that immense God stoops to assign an angel to each little child. The One who commands the dawn also counts the small.
1. After chapters of Job’s questions, God finally speaks, out of the whirlwind. But He does not explain Job’s suffering. Instead He asks His own questions. Have you commanded the morning? Have you walked in the depths of the sea? Do you know where light lives, or where darkness dwells? Question after question, each one larger than Job.
2. It could sound like God crushing a suffering man. It is not. God is lifting Job’s eyes to a reality so vast that it can be trusted even when it cannot be understood. Job’s problems have not shrunk, but the God he is dealing with has grown immense before him, and strangely that is a comfort. Job answers by laying his hand over his mouth. Some things are too great for words.
3. Now hold that picture of God, the One who commands the dawn and measures the sea, and turn to the Gospel. That same limitless God says something astonishing about the smallest and least among us. See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for their angels always behold the face of my Father in heaven.
4. Feel the distance that sentence crosses. The God vast beyond Job’s comprehension assigns to each little one an angel, and those angels stand in the very presence of the Father. The immensity of God does not make Him lose sight of the small. It is exactly the reverse. He is great enough to attend personally to every overlooked soul.
5. This is the tenderness at the heart of today’s feast. We are not lost in the vastness. The God who names the stars has not forgotten you in the crowd of billions. He knows you, He guards you, He has set His own messengers to watch over you. You are small before Him, and you are not overlooked.
6. And Jesus draws a warning from it too. If the little ones matter so much to God that their angels behold His face, then we had better not despise them. The child, the poor, the overlooked, the person the world counts as nothing, is watched over by heaven. How we treat the least is watched by the God who assigned their angels.
7. So the feast holds two truths in one hand. God is greater than we can grasp, and God is nearer than we dare hope. The whirlwind and the guardian angel are the same God. The One too vast for Job’s questions bends down to guard a child, and to guard you.
My Practice: Thank your guardian angel today, by name of the role God gave, for the unseen care you have received your whole life. And take seriously the little one near you, the child, the forgotten, the overlooked, treating them as heaven does.
Prayer
Lord God, out of the whirlwind You showed Job how vast and beyond us You are, the One who commands the morning and measures the sea. And yet You stoop to give each little one an angel who beholds Your face. We are amazed that a God so great is also so near, that You have not lost us in the vastness but guard us personally. Thank You for the unseen care of the holy angels through all our days. Make us humble enough to be Your little ones, trusting Your watchful love, and attentive enough never to despise the small and overlooked, whom heaven itself is watching. Amen.
