First Reading: Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13
The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will. Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin. The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapour and a snare of death. The soul of the wicked desires evil; his neighbour finds no mercy in his eyes. When a scoffer is punished, the simple becomes wise; when a wise man is instructed, he gains knowledge. The Righteous One observes the house of the wicked; he throws the wicked down to ruin. Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.

At that time: His mother and his brothers came to Jesus, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Tuesday – 25th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Gospel Reflection
Main Point: Told His mother and brothers are outside, Jesus says His family is whoever hears God’s word and does it. He is not pushing His mother away. He is opening the family so wide that we can be inside it too.
1. It is a short scene, only three verses, easy to pass over. Jesus is teaching indoors, packed in by the crowd, when word comes that His mother and brothers are outside, wanting to see Him. An ordinary interruption. His answer is not ordinary at all.
2. My mother and my brothers, He says, are those who hear the word of God and do it. At first it can sound cold, as if He brushed His own family aside. But look again. He is not shutting anyone out. He is throwing the door open to everyone in the room, and to us.
3. Because if the family of Jesus is made of those who hear God’s word and do it, then the door has a handle we can reach. We do not enter by blood, or by being born into the right place. We enter by receiving His word and living it. Anyone can belong to Him this closely.
4. And this does not push Mary out. It names why she is first inside. Who heard the word of God and did it more perfectly than the woman who said, let it be done to me according to your word? She is His mother by blood, yes, and even more she is His truest disciple. Jesus is describing exactly what made her great.
5. So the invitation is startling. We can be as near to Christ as His own family. Not as distant admirers, but as mother, brother, sister to Him. The gap we feel between ourselves and God is not as wide as we fear. It is closed by hearing His word and doing it, today, in one real thing.
6. Proverbs sharpens what that “doing” means. The Lord weighs the heart, it says, and to do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to Him than sacrifice. God is not fooled by appearances. Belonging to His family is not about looking religious. It is about a heart that hears Him and acts.
My Practice: Take the one thing you already know God is asking of you, the call you have been hearing and not answering, and do it today. That single act of obedience is how you take your place in His family.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You opened Your family so wide that even we can belong, not by blood or worthiness, but by hearing Your word and doing it. Thank You for a door we can actually enter. We often feel far from You, like outsiders looking in. Remind us that the distance closes the moment we receive Your word and act on it. Give us Mary’s kind of listening, the heart that says, let it be done to me. Show us the one thing You are asking of us today, and give us the courage to do it, so that we take our place as Your brother, Your sister, Your family. Amen.
